| Wiregrass Tech graduates Georgia’s first inmates with Technical Certificate |

VALDOSTA — Wiregrass Georgia Technical College in partnership with the Georgia Department of Corrections has successfully graduated five Valdosta State Prison inmates from a pilot education program. Kerry Watts, Horticulture Program coordinator for Wiregrass, taught the Landscape Technician Certificate Program over a period of two years and recently graduated five students. The pilot program was made possible through a generous donation from a private foundation and the Workforce Investment Act (WIA). The private foundation, which wants to be remain unnamed, and WIA, which is administered locally by Southern Georgia Regional Commission/Workforce Investment Board Area 18 and statewide by Georgia Department of Economic Development Workforce Division, paid for the students’ tuition and certification testing. All fees normally associated with attending college were exempted by Wiregrass because the students did not participate in student activities on campus. Read More. |
