| Violent crimes on the rise inside state prisons |

Violence inside the Auburn Correctional Facility was highlighted in a recent report out by the union representing correction officers. Along with two other state prisons, they also used 2 fights in Auburn since the end of February to showcase what they say is a need for new officers. New data released by the Corrections Department, inmate on staff assaults statewide have increased from 577 in 2010 to 747 last year. As of April 1st, there have been 193 assaults so far this year. Overall inmate populations are down, but it's the type of inmate who is now coming in which is different. The union says younger, more aggressive inmates are coming into prisons across the state now. An increase in gangs is helping inmates conceal drugs and weapons inside prisons like Auburn Correctional. The union will be adding 103 new jobs in 53 prisons across the state next year, but says that number is far too short. Read More. |
