Hundreds of prison staff will lose their jobs as units in Waikeria, Tongariro-Rangipo and Rimutaka Prisons are closed. About 260 staff are expected to lose their jobs over the next year in a proposal announced today. Department of Corrections chief executive Ray Smith said the closures of the older prison units coincided with the development of newer facilities elsewhere in the country.
