| Albuquerque says it already pays for much of jail |

Mayor Richard Berry’s administration on Wednesday slammed Bernalillo County’s attempt to force the city to help pay for the jail, calling it a “veiled attempt to impose multiple taxing.” In other words, Albuquerque residents already help pay for the Metropolitan Detention Center through their county taxes, the city said in a letter to the state Department of Finance and Administration. It will be up to the state ultimately to decide whether the county can impose an inmate fee on city government. “We agree that the city of Albuquerque should pay its fair share for (the jail). The overwhelming evidence is that our taxpayers have,” city Chief Administrative Officer Rob Perry said in a letter to the state. Read More. |
