JUNEAU — The House passed a North Pole legislator’s bill to give convicted criminals credit against their sentence for time served in electronic monitoring while waiting for trial.

House Bill 15, authored by Republican Rep. Tammie Wilson, allows courts to reduce a convicted person’s sentence for time spent under electronic monitoring. The state currently allows credit for pre-trial time in treatment.

The bill passed the House 34-4.

Wilson said encouraging people to go into electronic monitoring while awaiting trial will save the state money from housing them in jails as well as allowing people to continue to be active in their community before their trial.
