COLUMBUS (AP) -- The American Civil Liberties Union is calling for an independent investigation into conditions at Ohio's super-maximum security prison amid a long-running hunger strike. The protest at the Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown began March 16 to draw attention to recreation and programming restrictions, including a ban on religious gatherings, imposed after an assault on a corrections officer. A prisons department spokesman said five inmates of about 40 who began the strike were still refusing meals Monday. The prison houses Ohio's super-maximum security lockdown and a few high-security death row inmates, including members of the Lucasville 5, who were convicted of having roles in a deadly 1993 prison riot.
