Grand jury to hear Texas jail beating case

Investigators from the Henderson County, Tex., District Attorney's Office will turn their findings in the Robert Charles Dennis jailhouse beating over to a grand jury this week.
Dennis was hospitalized in critical condition for several days with head injuries from a Sept. 11 beating suffered while he was being held in a maximum security area of the Henderson County, Tex. Jail.
Grand jury members will be looking into the sheriff's department's actions and considering any additional charges that might be filed against other inmates involved in the beating.
Dennis was released from East Texas Medical Center Tyler last week.
Dennis was being held after his bond was revoked on a theft charge. The District Attorney's Office has decided to drop all charges against Dennis -- at least for now.
Earlier reports indicated Dennis may have suffered some brain damage as a result of the beating. Dropping the charges won't affect the county's liability for taking care of him, said District Attorney Donna Bennett.
The sheriff's department has turned over findings from its internal investigation to the D.A's Office, which will in turn go before the grand jury.
Sheriff's investigators previously said they believe at least three inmates, maybe more, were involved in the beating.
The sheriff's department is recommending that aggravated assault charges be filed against the inmates involved, but Sheriff Ronny Brownlow was reluctant to say how many inmates may now be implicated in the beating.
The sheriff's department has taken some public criticism for not protecting Dennis while he was in the maximum-security area. Cameras and visual inspections are available, but Assistant Chief Deputy Tony Allison has said cameras are not allowed in all areas because of privacy laws.
