Two escaped convicts from South Dakota were captured in Des Moines Thursday afternoon as they were apparently trying to buy ingredients to manufacture methamphetamine at a Wal-Mart store in Des Moines.

Police said that Juston Lee Mynatt, 24, and Jason Lee Heasley, 31, escaped early Tuesday from Beadle County, S.D., jail.

They are accused of an armed robbery Wednesday in Union County.
Police said Mynatt and Heasley were spotted earlier Thursday afternoon in a pickup by an off-duty Warren County police officer. Police said the off-duty officer followed them to the Wal-Mart parking lot.

Mynatt and Heasley circled the parking lot, and one got out and went inside the Wal-Mart, police said. That's when the Des Moines Police Department was called to assist.

Police spokesman Tony Stevenson said the men were arrested without incident and neither had a weapon.

Officers said the two men stopped in Union County Wednesday to ask for directions. Mynatt then took out a knife and demanded cash and credit cards from the woman in the home, and the men left, police said.

They apparently got stuck in snow on a rural road and broke into another farmhouse, where they got keys to another truck and took it from Clarke County.

Mynatt was booked into Polk County jail Thursday night on charges of manufacture of narcotics and first-degree robbery and had $143,000 bond set. Heasley had the same charges plus credit card theft and forgery and was being held on $172,500 bond. They were both also being held for South Dakota authorities without bond.

Heasley and Mynatt escaped from the Huron jail early Tuesday by breaking a second-floor window, bending some bars, squeezing through, climbing to the roof and jumping to the ground, authorities said.

It was the second time Heasley escaped from the jail.
