| Newly released documents shed little light on Wood's execution |

PHOENIX (KPHO/KTVK) - Answers are scarce on what happened with the execution of Joseph Wood, convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend and her father in 1989. Wood received a lethal injection last July, but witnesses said he gasped for air for nearly two hours before his death. There are still plenty of questions surrounding not only that execution last summer, but also on the drugs the state uses for all executions. The state argues it does not have to disclose information about the drugs and its suppliers. This station is one of several media outlets suing the Department of Corrections for information about execution protocol. Unfortunately, the 1,300-plus pages of documents the Department of Corrections released doesn't hold many answers. Critics quickly labeled the execution that lasted nearly two hours "botched," although a formal investigation - which some experts call incomplete - found Department of Corrections staff did nothing wrong.
