| Manufacturer asks DOC to return supplies of drug used in lethal injection |

As the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to hear oral arguments next week that may prohibit the use of the drug midazolam in executions by lethal injection, at least one of the drug's manufacturers has asked the Arizona Department of Corrections to return the product to them. The Illinois-based pharmaceutical firm Akorn sent a letter to Arizona Corrections Director Charles Ryan on March 4, the same day it posted a policy statement on its website saying that it would not sell drugs to prison systems for use in executions. "The use of midazolam and/or hydromorphone for lethal injection is clearly contradictory to the FDA approved indications for both products, and as controlled substances, the procurement or use of these products for executions may be in violation of the Controlled Substances Act," the letter said. The letter went on to say that using the drugs in executions "is contrary to Akorn's commitment to promote the health and wellness of human patients." Read More. |
