| New courts reducing Van Buren jail counts |

PAW PAW - Van Buren County's efforts to reduce recidivism and keep people out of jail appears to be paying off. The jail census is way down, said Lt. Chad Hunt, the Van Buren County jail administrator. The jail capacity is 158 inmates, and the population was 135 Monday. "I don't think the crime's down," Hunt said. "Last month we've been averaging between 125 to 130." His figures indicate the county could save more than $200,000 this year in incarceration costs. People arrested by Van Buren County authorities typically account for half the tally, Hunt said. Many of the rest are Berrien County residents who have violated parole or probation and are locked up under authority of the Michigan Department of Corrections. Read More. |
