TV Cameras Now Banned in Minnesota Prisons

Television interviews with prison inmates might be a thing of the past in Minnesota. The Minnesota Department of Corrections quietly adopted a new policy to ban television cameras for use during face-to-face interviews with inmates.

"The only adjustment to the policy is the ... disallowance of cameras," Corrections Commissioner Tom Roy told reporters at a news conference with Governor Mark Dayton.

However, that is a big adjustment. The new policy now includes TV cameras under a list of "contraband" prohibited in prisons. The Minnesota chapter of the "Society of Professional Journalists" issued a statement saying they're "outraged" over the policy. "The Minnesota DOC is now equating both still and video news cameras with contraband items such as pornography and lighters, which is patently absurd."
