| Pontiac prison readies for mental health overhaul |

PONTIAC — Signs that Illinois may be moving forward with a long-sought overhaul of the way it treats mentally ill prisoners were on display Monday for a group of state lawmakers. During a tour of the maximum-security Pontiac Correctional Center for a small group of freshmen members of the Illinois House and Senate, prison officials outlined how a former dining hall will be transformed into a mental health treatment area. As evidence of the future transformation, lines have been taped on the floor showing where various rooms and offices will be located once construction gets underway in December. The looming transformation is part of an ongoing federal lawsuit that seeks to improve how Illinois cares for a growing number of mentally ill inmates. Read More. |
