The Velma council discussed and took action on partnering with the Department of Corrections work release program, allowing two inmates to work for the town.

These inmates are nonviolent offenders – meaning they aren’t rapists, murderers or large-scale offenders – and are all screened before they are allowed into the Community Corrections program. The particular work center these inmates come from is stationed in Waurika.

The contract is not permanent, and if the council decides it does not work in their favor, they are allowed to back out at any time.

The total cost for two inmates to work for the City of Velma is $44 per month, plus gas to pick up the inmates from Waurika and the hourly pay for the employee driver who picks them up and returns them to their site. The DOC provides sack lunches for them every day they work, which is about five days per week.
