Addiction, Mental Health Are Major Focus Of Governor’s Jail Overcrowding Panel |

FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) – Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson appointed a sixteen person panel on Monday (April 27) to address the Natural State’s problem with prison overcrowding. One of the members he appointed was Washington County Circuit Judge Cristi Beaumont. For a “5NEWS This Morning” segment that aired Sunday (May 3), 5NEWS Managing Editor Larry Henry spoke to Beaumont ways to alleviate jail overcrowding. Beaumont operates Washington County’s Drug Court and Veterans Treatment Court, which has 225 participants. She told 5NEWS the veterans program is difficult and challenging, but, like the Drug Court, it has a job training component to help integrate people back into society. Beaumont also told 5NEWS that a major focus of the governor-appointed task force at its first meeting last week was addiction and mental health issues confronting those who end up in the legal system.
