| Union, Department of Correction differently assess rise in assaults on officers |

State prison union leaders have been warning for years that the safety of its correction officers is put at risk by dwindling staffing levels and an increased percentage of violent inmates. A recent news release from the State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association detailed an “alarming increase in violence” in Western New York prisons and across the state. The Department of Corrections and Community Supervision acknowledged in an October news release that there has been an “uptick” in the rates of assaults on staff, but noted that the statistics also show that nearly all prison assaults result in no or minor injuries.
