Vital role nurses play in Department of Corrections facilities

It's National Nurses Week ending May 12 on Florence Nightingale's birthday, celebrated as International Nurses Day. Nightingale is deemed the founder of modern nursing and known for expanding acceptable roles for women in the workforce. In New Hampshire, there are more than 22,000 Registered Nurses working in various setting around the state. Today I would like to recognize the nurses who work in the medical facilities within the Department of Corrections.

As the Director of Nursing for the N.H. Department of Corrections (NH DOC,) it is my honor to supervise forty-five nurses within our four medical facilities, located at each of the state prisons; the N.H. State Prison for Women in Goffstown, the N.H. State Prison for Men in Concord, the Secure Psychiatric Unit in Concord, and the Northern N.H. Correctional Facility in Berlin. The DOC's mission is to provide a safe, secure and humane correctional system through effective supervision and appropriate treatment of offenders, and a continuum of services that promote successful reentry into society for the safety of our citizens and in support of crime victims.
