A federal lawsuit alleges violations of civil and constitutional rights at the Santa Fe County Detention Center. The lawsuit was filed last week in Santa Fe over the jail's strip-search policy. An attorney for the company that runs the jail, Scott Eaton, says he cannot comment on the specifics of the lawsuit. But he says jails must protect inmates while being denied the tools to do that. The jail had strip-searched every person booked into the lockup until December 15th, when the policy was changed. Warden Kerry Dixon said at the time that the policy might be unconstitutional. He said that since December 15th, strip-searches have been given only to prisoners brought to the jail on felony drug or weapons charges or violent offenses or with criminal histories including escapes. |
