Verne Taylor suspects the county jail has plugged Nevada City's sewers one time too many. So the city's public works director is gathering debris from last weekend's sewer backup - which spilled about 5,000 gallons of raw sewage into Deer Creek - to show the Nevada County Sheriff's Office exactly what he thinks the jail has been doing. Taylor said the jail cleaned out its sewage lines, flushing food wrappers and grease down the pipes Saturday, which he thinks caused the plugged sewer and subsequent overflow. Taylor said he suspects the jail has plugged the city's sewer system other times, as well. The blockage last Saturday also caused raw sewage to back up into the Tinnery, an antique business on York Street in downtown Nevada City, Taylor said. The cleanup from that will be costly, he said, and may result in the city filing a claim with Nevada County. Taylor said he will meet with City Manager Mark Miller today to discuss the situation and then plans to take his bucket of debris to Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal and Lt. Mike Hughes, who is in charge of the Wayne Brown Correctional Center. The blockage "is possibly commissary of the inmates that gathered over a period of time," Royal said. "We'll know when they bring it by." Royal said jailers do their best to educate prisoners to not flush food wrappers down toilets, "but there's only so much we can do with inmates." |
