One unarmed guard watched over 33 maximum-security inmates at the Gadsden County Jail on Sunday night when a Quincy murder suspect escaped.

"We haven't had this happen since I've been sheriff," Sheriff Morris Young said. "We're trying to see, how did he compromise us this time?"

Gregory Sapp Jr., 24, was able to sneak past the guard, and another watching from a camera, and out of the 10,000-square-foot recreational grass yard where inmates can play on the basketball court, walk or sit under a canopy.

Sapp was able to loosen the rod at the bottom of a gate in the chain-link fence on the north end of the yard and get under it. He was then able to burrow under another chain-link fence about four to five feet away, Young said. The portion of the fence where Sapp escaped is visible to the guard watching the camera, Young said. The fence is being inspected and repaired.
