An inmate injured a correctional officer at a prison in Buckeye, Ariz., Tuesday on the one-year anniversary of a hostage standoff that became the nation's longest in decades. Officials were investigating the assault at Arizona State Prison Complex-Lewis to determine if it was connected to last year's crisis in which two inmates kept two officers hostage inside a tower, said Corrections Department spokeswoman Cam Hunter. The condition of the officer, a male, was unknown. The inmate was detained but it's unknown if he used a weapon. "Unfortunately, these sort of things are not terribly uncommon," Hunter said. "On the very best day when we do the very most that we can ... we're still working in an inmate population, we're still working with people who don't want to be where they are." |
