Feb. 24 trial set for inmate in prison hostage situation

A judge set a Feb. 24 trial date for an inmate who participated in a 15-day hostage standoff at a state prison west of Phoenix, Ariz., last year.
Ricky Wassenaar was originally scheduled to go on trial Wednesday on charges that include sexual assault, kidnapping and attempted murder.
Superior Court Judge Warren Granville postponed the trial last week, however, to deal with defense motions and set a new date during a hearing Wednesday. Wassenaar is representing himself.
Wassenaar and fellow inmate Steven Coy took two correctional officers hostage at the Arizona State Prison Complex-Lewis in Buckeye on Jan. 18, 2004.
A male hostage was released after one week but the inmates held a female hostage until they surrendered on Feb. 1. Guard Lois Fraley, who has spoken publicly about the ordeal, said she was raped by both inmates while they held her captive.
Coy pleaded guilty to all charges. He received seven life sentences for his role in the standoff and was transferred to a prison in Maine.
Wassenaar asked the judge to keep Coy's guilty plea, sexual assault of a kitchen worker and assault of an officer from being used in his trial. Granville is scheduled to rule on the motion Feb. 11.
