| Napa jail hits pause on inmate tablets, awaits security updates |

Napa County jail inmates will be offline for the next two months, as officials wait for tougher and more secure tablet computers. Corrections officials announced they have paused a pilot program that lent the touchscreen devices to inmates, withdrawing the 80 slates until mid-July. The program will return this summer with new tablets designed to be more durable and harder to hack, according to Bret Prebula, staff services manager for the county Department of Corrections. Summarizing the program’s progress in its first three months, Prebula said the programming has been generally popular with inmates but acknowledged the need to better armor the computers against vandalism and illegal modifications to reach the outside Internet.
