A fight between rival gangs at Cook County (Ill.) Jail on Saturday left seven of the 20 inmates involved injured, including three taken to hospitals outside the prison with serious stab wounds, officials said. It was the second melee involving serious stabbing injuries at the jail within the last three months. Saturday's brawl started at about 1:30 p.m. when inmates in the maximum-security Division 10 had free time in a dayroom, said Sally Daly, spokeswoman for Sheriff Michael Sheahan. "It was sparked by disagreement between members of rival street gangs," Daly said. "We had a total of seven inmates injured." Of the seriously wounded inmates, two were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and a third to Stroger Hospital. All three were in stable condition. Four others with minor cuts and bruises were treated at the jail's Cermak Hospital. The unit housing 50 to 60 inmates was on lockdown, and the incident was under investigation, Daly said. On Oct. 16, 21 inmates were hurt in a knife fight between rival gangs in another dayroom in the jail at 26th and California. |
