An administrative employee of the Santa Fe County jail was arrested last Friday afternoon and charged with embezzlement for allegedly taking money from an inmates' fund. Santa Fe County Sheriff Greg Solano said Sandra E. Montaño, 56, was brought in for questioning at 3 p.m. Friday after officials of Management and Training Corporation, the private firm contracted to run the jail, reported that morning that she was suspected of embezzlement. He said Montaño then confessed to taking $15,000 to $20,000 from the inmates' trust fund- a fund through which relatives and friends of inmates can send them money to purchase such items and clothing, food and prepaid telephone cards- from November through this month. Solano said a preliminary examination of the trust fund's books revealed that as much as $80,000 may be missing. Solano emphasized that Montaño worked in a secretarial position at the jail and was not an officer. She has worked for the jail since November 2001, Solano said. Montaño's arrest is the latest in a series of problem for MTC. The company was criticized earlier this year by a nine-member state team that did a full-scale contract and security audit of the jail and found problems in the areas of inmate classification, grievance procedures, discipline, records and inmate programs. |
