Court prevents officer tower shift cuts |

Michigan corrections officials are looking to keep open more than 100 job vacancies and put off prison maintenance projects. The moves are part of an effort hold down spending after the Michigan Court of Appeals ruled the department can't reduce shifts in prison officer towers. The appellate court continued a temporary injunction on the proposed officer tower cuts until the issue is decided by the Michigan Civil Service Commission. The Michigan Corrections Organization asked for the injunction. The union was worried fewer officer tower shifts would mean greater risk for injury because fewer people would be watching inmates. The department wanted to cut 20 officer shifts at Michigan's most violent prisons to save nearly $13 million. |
