Cutting prison spending not easy

Balancing public safety with affordability is a complex issue getting more attention as those costs add up.

Much of the debate has focused on whether we have become too much of a “lock ’em up and throw away the key” society, particularly in Wisconsin.

This issue had overtures in an Eau Claire County sentencing last week for Thomas C. Biesterveld, who last August murdered his wife, Lois Biesterveld, by shooting her in the back at close range.

Biesterveld, 61, is on oxygen around the clock and attended his sentencing in a wheelchair. Both District Attorney Gary King and Biesterveld’s attorney recommended three years in prison, but Judge Kristina Bourget gave him 10 years.
