| Most Alaska jails facing 45 percent cut in state funds |

ANCHORAGE - Two-thirds of Alaska’s community and regional jails are on track to lose nearly half of their state funding due to budget cuts -- a fiscal blow which may cause at least one of the facilities to close. The jails, spread across 15 cities and boroughs statewide, house inmates awaiting trial as well as those sentenced to terms of one year or less. They are separate from the state’s prisons, which house inmates sentenced to a year or more of confinement. According to an overview of Alaska’s jail system written by the University of Alaska Anchorage Justice Center, community jails are operated by local authorities which contract with the state to hold inmates arrested on state charges. The state Department of Corrections also operates several regional jails, which collect inmates from smaller village holding areas in areas which lack community jails. Read More. |
