Now that the funding for construction of a new Adams County Jail has been secured, the County Board is starting to move forward with determining the size of the new jail. On a recommendation from the Jail sub-committee, the Board voted Tuesday night to hire Springfield attorney Bruce Bonczyk as a consultant, on a contract worth up to $40,000. Bonczyk, who according to his website is also a licensed engineer, has done similar work for several Illinois counties. Jail sub-committee Chairman Mark Peter (R-5) says Boncyzk will review all requests for qualifications that the sub-committee will ask for, staring either later this month or in early July. Peter hopes those can be reviewed and ready by the August board meeting. “We kinda want to get back on track so that we can move forward and have a chance to be in construction by next spring, by next construction season. We’ve kind of been treading water here for the last 30 days, getting this funding issue nailed down, so we’re back on track, we hope”. The “funding issue” Peter referred to was House Bill 220, which corrected the language on the April 7 ballot to the satisfaction of the Illinois Department of Revenue. The bill was passed on May 31, the final day of the regular session of the General Assembly, and signed the same day by Governor Bruce Rauner (R). The county can now start collecting the sales tax on July 1. Read More. |
