Once or twice each week for years, Pamela Sweat and her incarcerated son, David, wrote each other letters. About two months ago, David's letters stopped coming. New York State Police announced Saturday that two convicted murders had escaped overnight from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora. One of them, Pamela Sweat learned, was her son. David Sweat, 34, was serving a sentence of life without parole for his role in the 2002 killing of a Broome County sheriff's deputy when he and fellow inmate Richard Matt, 48, executed an elaborate escape from the prison.
