| Calloway Jail starts program where inmates tend garden |

Inmates at the Calloway County Jail who are not there because of violent crimes are given many chances to show that they can be of service to the community during their sentences. Involvement with road projects, duties with Murray-Calloway County Parks & Recreation, as well as a more visible role helping accept items donated to the periodic Make A Difference Day recycling drive all help boost to the inmates’ morale while also saving money for local and state governments. So when an idea arose to do as other counties have done and have inmates create and then tend their own garden, Calloway County Jailer Ken Claud decided to look into it. Now, he and the inmates are playing the waiting game all gardeners must endure when it comes to the time to see if a bountiful harvest will be had. “It’s a chance to produce fresh vegetables that will be put to good use for meals at the jail. However, the great part about this is, if there is a surplus from this, then we’ll also be able to send some of those things to (Murray) Need Line, maybe the (Calloway County) Senior Citizens Center and others, so it’s also a chance for them to help their community at the same time,” Claud said. “Right now, it is in its infancy, and this time, we didn’t have them create a huge garden, but I really think this is going to be a good thing in the future.
