The San Francisco Sheriff's Department is investigating an apparent sickout by deputies at the main county jail after an officer was beaten unconscious by an inmate. After the officer was beaten at the San Bruno facility earlier this month, 13 of the 20 deputies on duty during the attack called in sick on their first scheduled day back at work. Sheriff Michael Hennessey has sent notices to the deputies warning them they could face discipline because the apparent sickout is a violation of the City Charter. The head of the deputies' union says no labor action was authorized. In the January Eighth attack, the deputy suffered a broken shoulder and gash to his head. The inmate who allegedly beat the deputy is in custody for robbery. He's now facing new charges stemming from the attack. |
