Mexico aims to break up drug lords' prison links

Authorities have transferred five famous inmates to new prisons as part of a crackdown on security gaps at Mexico's top security prison.
The transfers announced late Sunday night were meant to break up growing networks that let suspected drug bosses control their gangs from within the famously tough La Palma prison west of Mexico City.
The federal Public Security Department said the men "maintained a close relationship with other highly dangerous inmates, such as Osiel Cardenas Guillen and Benjamin Arellano Felix," who are accused of leading two of the country's top drug cartels.
Federal officials say Cardenas and Arellano managed to forge an alliance within prison to battle the growth of a third, rival gang, the Juarez Cartel. Officials said Cardenas and Arellano now have been isolated from one another inside La Palma.
Transferred to the Puente Grande prison near Guadalajara were Daniel "Earlopper" Arizmendi, the convicted leader of Mexico's most feared kidnapping gang; accused drug army leader Miguel Angel Beltran; and a suspected member of a leftist guerrilla group, Hector Cerezo Contreras.
Moved to a similar high-security prison in Matamoros were suspected drug boss Miguel Angel Caro Quintero and Cerezo's brother Antonio. The Cerezos are accused of trying to bomb bank branches near Mexico City.
