More money is needed for drug treatment in Iowa's state prisons and lawmakers will be asked to help, the head of the state's corrections department said. Gary Maynard, director of the Iowa Department of Corrections, said more money spent on drug treatment for inmates will mean fewer inmates returning to the system. Maynard said he will ask the Legislature for additional money for drug treatment and mental health and education programs. He did not specify how much he'd ask for. About 75 percent of the state's 8,500 inmates require substance abuse treatment, but only 1,000 received such treatment. For many of the inmates, prison is the only place they can receive treatment, Maynard said. Fred Scaletta, corrections department spokesman, said that forces the prison system to treat those who are most in need. "If they come in with a substance abuse problem, we have an obligation to treat them because it further protects the public," Scaletta said. "If we treat them, we know it is less likely that they will reoffend." He said fewer offenders re-entering the system will mean a savings for taxpayers. |
