A cellblock of at least 24 prisoners is under quarantine following a flu outbreak among inmates, Dallas County jailers say. For the past week, the group has been in the Lew Sterrett Justice Center's west tower, separated from other inmates after several prisoners came down with the flu, according to Sgt. Don Peritz, the Sheriff's Department spokesman. The isolated group includes some of the jail's trusties who have been permitted to work in janitorial and other jobs around the jail complex. Trusties in the quarantine are not allowed to leave their cellblock or mix with other prisoners. The county health department's epidemiological unit was notified of about five cases of flu among inmates and of the decision to quarantine the prisoners by the University of Texas Medical Branch, which is under contract to handle the jail's medical care, said Zachary Thompson, county health and human services director. He said flu shots are available to jail staff. The quarantine should last another week or so, until the flu cases run their course, officials said. |
