Iowa's prison and parole system needs more hired help, state Corrections Director Gary Maynard said today. Maynard met informally with members of the Iowa Legislature at a Statehouse breakfast meeting and later spelled out a budget message to the Iowa Board of Corrections that outlined a need for additional money. The Department of Corrections, which includes prisons and community corrections, has an annual budget of about $273 million. Maynard didn't put a pricetag on his request, but he said the state's prisons - which hold about 8,500 inmates - have lost 139 employees over the past six months. This includes people called to military duty, those who have left state employment, or those who have transferred to other state agencies, he said. The overall department has about 3,850 employees. Meanwhile, Iowa's parole and probation programs have gained 2,000 offenders in community corrections programs over the past year as efforts have been made to curb the growth of the state's prisons, Maynard said. That points to a need for 38 more parole and probation officers to handle higher-risk offenders, he added. |
