Nevada's Department of Corrections has announced a new plan to streamline the agency while cutting costs. "Right-fitting" is geared towards men between 18 and 21 who are serving time in the state's boot camp program at the High Desert State Prison northwest of Las Vegas. It's tailored made for the young. Right-fitting places inmates with similar needs under one roof. Once an inmate is right-fitted, they can then move on to programs that prepare them for life beyond prison. Howard Skolnic is the warden at the Southern Desert Correctional Facility says, "95 percent of the people you see today will be coming back into your community you can have them come back angry and broke or you can have them come back with some training and some money in the bank." A change in direction for state corrections, one which transforms punishment into pride, and a second chance at a life away from crime. Corrections officials' say new research shows some promising news about crime in Nevada. Although the state's population is increasing by about 60-thousand people a year, the number of prisoners in state facilities is staying constant. About 10-thousand people are being held in Nevada state prisons. |
