A Maryland prison inmate whose pregnancy prompted anti-abortion activists to lobby Gov. Robert Ehrlich for leniency has delivered a daughter. Rebecca Calimer Price, 31, gave birth at 3:01 a.m. Wednesday at Laurel Regional Hospital, her lawyer, R. Martin Palmer, said Thursday. Price, of Greencastle, Pa., is serving a five-year sentence at the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women for felony theft of more than $23,000 from clients of the Hagerstown travel agency where she worked. Her supporters, including the Baltimore-based group Defend Life, say the sentence, handed down in July, is too harsh and that Price should be allowed to be with her daughter, Hannah Elizabeth Moats. Palmer has filed a petition in Washington County Circuit Court seeking to have Price brought directly to Washington County Circuit Court upon her release from the hospital so her sentence can be reconsidered "in the best interest of the minor child." Also on Wednesday, Washington County Circuit Judge Donald E. Beachley wrote to Price's prison warden, Marsha Maloff, seeking advice on any programs open to Price that "would facilitate or promote bonding between mother and child." Price isn't eligible for a program called Tamar's Children that allows new mothers to live in a dorm-like setting for six months with their babies because her sentence is too long, she's a Pennsylvania resident and she doesn't have a substance-abuse program, according to Division of Correction. Price's first parole hearing is set for July, three months before her earliest possible release date, said Mark Vernarelli, a spokesman for the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. |
