| More counties taking inmates after Kingman riots |

The Arizona Department of Corrections announced Wednesday it had moved an additional 113 inmates to three county jails and state facilities after housing at a private prison near Kingman was made uninhabitable by last week's rioting. The most recent transfer of inmates brings to 1,168 the number of prisoners removed from the Management & Training Corp. facility about 20 miles west of Kingman in Golden Valley. Inmate riots over the Fourth of July weekend destroyed living areas in the private prison's medium-custody housing units. Corrections officials brought in heavily armed guards to restore order, then began relocating inmates. The state already has placed 380 inmates in the Pinal County Jail as part of the withdrawal. "The cost from what happened at ASPC-Kingman will be borne by Management & Training Corp. Our position is that Arizona taxpayers will not be put on the financial hook for the incidents or contracted services that are not rendered," said Andrew Wilder, a DOC spokesman. Read More. |
