| EXIT program's non-violent felons 'embrace family' at fun day outside jail |

MUSKEGON, MI -- Brenton Mitchell has a simple plan for when he gets out of jail: Find a job and take care of his family. With the help of the Empowering X-offenders in Transition (EXIT) program, Mitchell's dream is becoming a more realistic goal. Mitchell even got a chance this week to reconnect with his three children during a special family fun day held outside the jail walls. EXIT, the fledgling Muskegon County initiative, prevents some non-violent offenders from heading back to prison or entering prison for the first time. Instead, participants are incarcerated in the county jail, if the sentencing guidelines allow, and receive life- and job-skills training with the promise of temporary employment.
