| Now is no time to build more private prisons |

After last week's violence at the Arizona State Prison Complex-Kingman, the state should perform a long-overdue assessment of whether private prisons are in the best interest of public safety and are a responsible use of taxpayer dollars. Gov. Doug Ducey's call for a full investigation of the Kingman violence is warranted and welcome, provided he appoints a committee that includes independent and agreed-upon experts and legislators from both parties. Pending the results of this investigation, Gov. Ducey should immediately place a moratorium on new private-prison contracts and halt the RFP (request for proposal) for 1,000 new beds scheduled for July 22, estimated to cost the state $24.2 million.
