| Colorado Springs-area ministry with horses helps heal women parolees |

The trio of horses at Freedom to Victory Ranch in Green Mountain Falls aren't exactly renowned for their pedigree, but for a ministry that works to mend fractured lives of women parolees, that may work in their favor. There's Shauspa, a 33-year-old Arab quarter horse with a fearsome spirit that defies his age; Frosty, a 20-year-old brood mare missing one ear and still limping after "her leg was chewed up by coyotes when she was a baby." Last but not least is D.J., a 20-year-old injured roping horse, also partly disabled, whose name derives from the letters burned into his skin. "I don't know what it means, but he's got a brand on him," said Karen Hulbert, founder and sole employee of Sets Captives Free, a fledgling ministry in which women fresh from prison work with the ailing horses as a way of reconnecting with the rewards of empathy.
