Digital logs to save time in Michigan prisons

LANSING – Corrections officers are largely supportive of a system that digitally logs the officers' rounds and soon will be installed in all Michigan prisons, a union official said.

Through the system, officers carry electronic wands and press them into buttons on cell doors to digitally record their presence as they perform security checks around the prison. After the rounds, officers plug the wands into a docking station and the data is uploaded into an electronic log.

The system has been used in a handful of the Michigan Department of Corrections' high-security facilities since 2006, but it will be added to all 32 Michigan prisons in the state plus the Detroit Detention Center after a $1.3 million contract with the Bay City-based MKC Group was approved last week.

Corrections spokesman Chris Gautz said officers currently log their rounds by hand and the "round readers" system saves time and improves accuracy.
