(WAFF) -

Governor Bentley will go before congress today to talk about the efforts he's made to reform the state's prisons.

The governor will testify before a house committee at 9:30 a.m. CST in Washington D.C.

Governor Bentley signed the prison reform bill into law in May and it's set to go into effect January 31st. The bill was designed to keep the feds from intervening in the state's department of corrections.

It's expected to cut Alabama's prison population by more than 4,200 people, save more than $380 million in future costs and provide supervision for people released from prison, all over the next five years.
