A flash fire or propane explosion Wednesday injured eight workers, two critically, at a construction site next to St. Brides Correctional Center in Chesapeake, Va., corrections and fire officials said. Department of Corrections spokesman Larry Traylor said department workers at the site said six of the eight required hospitalization. He did not know the conditions of the injured. Capt. Steve Johnson of the Chesapeake Fire Department initially put the injured at five, with two critically injured. The injured were working on a kitchen in the first phase of a $32.5 million project to replace the low-security St. Brides. The injured did not include inmates, Traylor said, but some corrections department workers were working with the contract workers. The prison has between 500 and 600 inmates and has a youthful offender program, Traylor said. A second phase of the prison replacement program is expected to add 800 beds at a cost of $26.8 million. |
