| Bentley brags about prison reform on Capitol Hill |

WASHINGTON – Alabama's nascent effort to overhaul the state prison system was recognized as a national model Tuesday when Gov. Robert Bentley testified about it before a congressional oversight committee. "In Alabama, we have… chosen to no longer conduct business as usual with prisons," Bentley told members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. "The whole adage of 'lock 'em up and throw away the key' isn't effective for those being sent to prison or those who have to operate a prison." In a two-day hearing that coincides with President Barack Obama's focus on criminal justice reform, Congress is reviewing new state policies for making the system fairer, safer and less expensive. Bentley signed a prison reform law in May and created the Alabama Criminal Justice Oversight and Implementation Council to oversee the changes affecting sentencing, probation and parole. Read More. |
