STAUNTON — In November, inmate Christopher R. Collins brutally attacked his cellmate at the Augusta Correctional Center in Craigsville after the man refused to have sex with him. On Monday the 55-year-old Collins, already serving a 25-year prison term after being convicted of malicious wounding in 2009 in Southhampton County, was given an additional five years behind bars for the beating. The sentence, handed down in Augusta County Circuit Court, means Collins will remain in prison until roughly his 78th birthday in 2039. Rupen Shah, the chief deputy commonwealth’s attorney for Augusta County, said prior to the attack Collins and the victim had an ongoing, consensual sexual relationship, and said the two men had engaged in sex about 10 times.
