The head of Michigan's department of corrections is defending the state's action to change the food vendor at state prisons. The state has terminated a $145,000,000 contract with Aramark correctional services. The company was fined $200,000 last year for unapproved menu substitutions, inadequate staffing, employee misconduct and reports of maggot and rodent problems. Department of corrections head, Heidi Washington, was at the capitol Wednesday speaking on another issue, but was asked about food service to prisoners. Washington said: "when the decision was made that we were going to end our relationship, we needed to move swiftly and safely to ensure that there was not going to be any interruption in the delivery of the food service. You know food service is a critical, critical part in the operation of safe and secure prisons and so we looked to the only other qualified bidder which was trinity. We talked with them and ended up cutting a deal with them." Read More. |
