Robert "Fleetwood" Bowden sold drugs, used drugs and spent about 16 years of his life behind bars because of drugs. On the inside, he rubbed shoulders with notorious dealers and gangsters who knew they'd never be free again. As Bowden watched TV with some of these men just before his last release, they warned that they'd kill him if he came back, he said. He never knew whether that was said out of love, or if they really meant it, but Bowden decided he didn't want to find out. "These were my friends but they were like the big brothers I never had in my life," Bowden said. When he we was released in Lompoc, Calif., authorities gave him $16 and a bus ticket to San Francisco.
