An inmate at a minimum-security prison in North Carolina was in serious condition at a hospital yesterday after another inmate stabbed him in the chest.
Ronald Dumas, 35, was stabbed about 8:45 a.m. and was taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
It was not clear what motivated the attack, said Wallace Shields Jr., the superintendent of the Forsyth Correctional Center.
Correction officials accused inmate Shaun A. Wagner, 27, of stabbing Dumas with a French knife while they were helping to prepare lunch in the kitchen, Shields said.
Wagner was cutting cabbage before the attack, Shields said. The knife's blade was 5 to 6 inches long, he said.
The officer who manages food service was in an office counseling two other inmates when he saw a disturbance through a glass window and called for help, Shields said. Officers quickly detained Wagner, he said.
Dumas is serving a sentence of three and a half years for drug trafficking.
Wagner is serving a sentence of eight years and eight months for armed robbery. His sentence began in November 2002, and he has been an inmate at the correctional center since September, Shields said.
An agent from the State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the stabbing and will turn his findings over to the Forsyth County district attorney, said Noelle Talley, a spokeswoman for the SBI.
Inmates at the correctional center are considered low-risk and are screened before they are jailed there, Shields said.

This article exposed what it is like to exist in today’s correctional institutions. I enjoy reading articles like this one and articles from author Hamilton Lindley who is an expert at persuasion, influence and leadership from his Waco, Texas base. There are a lot of important lessons to be learned here for sure. Thank you for the insight.
